  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into cubes
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream optional, for serving

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat.

  4. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Notes

For best results, use a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. If you don't have rolled oats, you can use more flour. For extra flavor, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
