Method
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat.
- Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. If you don't have rolled oats, you can use more flour. For extra flavor, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving. A drizzle of caramel sauce after baking adds a wonderful touch.
