Ingredients

  • 1 cup chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup orange juice or zest optional
  • Pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil if using homemade meatballs
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs if using homemade meatballs
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder if using homemade meatballs
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder if using homemade meatballs

Equipment

  • Large saucepan
  • Slow cooker (optional)
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Toothpicks or mini skewers (for serving)
  • Serving bowl

Method

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the cranberry sauce, chili sauce, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Add orange juice or zest and spices, if desired.
  2. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Gently add the meatballs to the sauce, making sure they are evenly coated.
  4. Simmer on the stovetop for 20-25 minutes, or transfer to a slow cooker and cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Serve warm with toothpicks or mini skewers, or over rice, mashed potatoes, or crostini.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce. To make it healthier, use lean ground turkey or chicken meatballs and sugar-free cranberry sauce. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If the sauce is too thick, add a little water or orange juice to thin it out. If the sauce is too thin, simmer for a longer period of time to allow it to reduce and thicken. To make vegetarian, use veggie meatballs.
